The Splendor of Truth
The Splendor of Truth
Foreword by Bishop Robert Barron
Introduction by Matthew Petrusek
A landmark encyclical of Pope St. John Paul II’s pontificate, The Splendor of Truth is a brilliant presentation of Catholic moral theology for the contemporary world. Leaning on the bedrock of the Gospel and perennial Catholic teaching, John Paul II evaluates the modern ethical landscape and makes a strong case for biblical and natural law morality against the popular moral theories of relativism and proportionalism. At the heart of this encyclical, now considered to be a standard text for courses in moral theology, lies the principle that the whole of truth centers on Jesus Christ, who shapes our freedom and answers our questions about good and evil.

“Veritatis Splendor is an increasingly relevant text for our times. Freedom without truth lapses into arbitrariness, and truth without freedom devolves into oppression; they must always be yoked together.”
About the Author
Pope St. John Paul II (1920-2005) was a giant in the twentieth-century Catholic Church. A philosopher, theologian, poet, and dramatist, he called for a "New Evangelization" in the modern world and, through his writings and papacy, established the model by which the Church could answer that call. He was canonized by Pope Francis in 2014.
