When St. Dominic founded the Order of Preachers in the thirteenth century, it was to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ to the world. Today, given the ever-widening gap between Christian tradition and secular culture, this task remains as relevant as ever—not only for the Dominicans but for every baptized Christian. Who will have the courage to go out into this gap and witness to the power of God’s love?

In Preachers at Prayer: Soundings in the Dominican Spiritual Tradition, priest and scholar Paul Murray presents four talks on the subjects of prayer, study, and preaching, highlighting the deep interconnectedness of all three aspects in the life of the preacher. Drawing on the timeless wisdom of the masters of the Dominican tradition, he demonstrates how conversion begins first in the soul of the evangelist, spreading outward from a heart on fire.

Shipping & Returns

When will my order ship?

  • When items are in-stock, orders placed before 8am CT should ship out that same business day from our Illinois warehouse.
  • Depending on your shipping address and the shipping method you select at checkout, in-stock items should arrive between 7-10 business days.
  • If your order contains a preordered/backordered item, no items in your order will ship until the preordered item becomes available (i.e. your order will ship all at once.)

Do you ship internationally?

  • We offer two international shipping methods, Passport and DHL. Passport has all taxes and duties included in the shipping cost. DHL is delivered duties unpaid, and you may be responsible for taxes and duties when your package is delivered.
  • International orders are subject to unpredictable delays by customs, and are subject to security mandates, duties, and other fees upon receipt.
  • Please allow international orders a significant amount of flexibility in timeframe to receipt.
  • We do accept international returns, but we are unable to generate return labels for international shipments.

Return Policy

For non-damaged, standard returns:

Our products may be returned if they were purchased within the last 90 days, are unused, and are still in their original packaging. Original shipping costs are already collected by the shipper, and therefore the original shipping costs are not refundable.

We will provide a pre-paid return label to you. The maximum shipping cost covered will be $20. If the return shipping costs in excess of $20 to ship it to us, that will be deducted from the refund amount. (Meaning, if one orders 30 bibles and changes their mind after receiving them, it would not be good stewarding of our donor-provided funds for the ministry to cover that return shipment.)

Exceptions and limitations:

  • Bulk books (evangelization pricing): Books sold in pre-boxed quantities are evangelistic in nature and priced as low as possible, and we cover the original shipping cost. For that reason, we are unable to cover return shipping costs for bulk books. If you choose to return a bulk book, return shipping will be the customer’s responsibility in that case.
  • Seasonal titles (including Advent and Lenten Gospel Reflections): Seasonal titles are final sale and are not eligible for returns or refunds.

For damaged items:

For damages to the item that are significant in nature, such as missing pages, large gashes in the cover, major creases in the cover, or dents, etc, please email us at sales@wordonfire.org for a no-cost replacement. For minor damages, like a nick or otherwise tiny blemish, or a slightly bent inward corner, or a slightly flaked embossing, these returns may be accepted but the return shipping will not be covered in order to be good stewards of the donor provided funds that make our non-profit ministry possible. For items that are shipped in protective packaging, such as the Leather Bible, note that the outer box is meant to absorb damage in shipping, and the box should not be considered the product itself, and the box is not replaceable.

How can I set up my return?

Please email us to set up your return at sales@wordonfire.org.

Your order record will be retrieved by the system based on the email address you used to make the purchase. For this reason, please have the email address or the order number (example: Q######) handy when beginning the return process. We are able to accept international returns, but we are unable to generate return shipping labels from countries outside the United States.

What People Are Saying

Gerard Timoner headshot

“Preachers at Prayer is a book that helps the reader understand more deeply what is stated so powerfully in John 1:18: Only the one who comes from the breast of the Father can make him known. This book is a must-read for all the members of the Dominican family and for all those who desire to share the warmth of God’s love that they know and feel in their hearts.”

— Gerard Timoner, OP, Master of the Order of Preachers, from the foreword

“Preachers at Prayer is a moving invitation to every preacher. Fr. Murray shows that it is in quiet prayer that preachers find—or rather, are given—these essential elements that light fire both in their hearts and in the hearts of hearers: spiritual depth, from preachers who have surrendered themselves to the Gospel of Christ; delight in God and in God’s beloved; wisdom and integrity, fruits of the cross of Christ in which preachers lovingly share; compassion for God’s people, which shines not only in words spoken but first and foremost in lived, visible witness; and hope—the piercing conviction that God is ever-faithful, and that his Word, Jesus, is himself the fullness of truth. Fr. Murray offers every preacher profound insight from the great teachers of the Dominican spiritual tradition and thus invites us to lean deeply, in love and surrender, into the side of Christ and into the heart of the Church. A striking quotation from Bl. Humbert of Romans will stay with me as a permanent, stirring challenge: ‘If preaching fails, there is spiritual famine.’”

“This much-needed book by revered spiritual master Paul Murray, OP, responds to a concern of Pope Francis that people ‘suffer because of homilies.’ With erudition and eloquence, Fr. Murray encourages preachers to harness the ‘intelligence of the faith’ so that, in preaching, they can devote closer attention to the ‘void or gap in our lives,’ ‘that ache for God familiar to us all, our heart’s wound of longing.’ Preaching is to be focused ‘on the drama of divine mercy’; it must pass on ‘a personal and living experience of the mystery’ (Pope St. John Paul II) and ‘awaken new desire for God and new hope.’ For ‘if preaching fails, there is spiritual famine’ (Bl. Humbert of Romans). This book provides nourishment that leads to a feast.”

“Preachers at Prayer is a rare gift. Although it is a collection of Paul Murray’s addresses to Dominicans, it allows the rest of us who must also proclaim the Gospel to eavesdrop and so learn vital lessons about prayer, about study, and about that darkness that is caused not by obscurity but by the radiance of God’s presence. Learning these lessons will change us. This rare gift is for everyone.”

— Msgr. Roderick Strange, Professor of Theology at St. Mary’s University, Twickenham (England), author of Journey into Light
